If you don't like books that make you think, this one will also fill the bill in that respect, as it's also a great story. It's difficult to read without seeing the references to our current society. The ending is such a surprise, I don't want to give it away.

This is quite an interesting book. First, the dialogue and pacing are stellar. The fact that the author is a screenwriter shines through in this regard. The story is intriguing. The enhanced class reminded me a bit of _Feed_ by MT Anderson. I thought Feed did a bit of a better job showing us what it was like to have a constant flow of information heading directly to one's brain. I was actually quite interested in reading more about what life was like as one of the enhanced people. But that's not quite what this book was about. It was more about showing the disparity between those who are enhanced and those who aren't and the non-enhanced reaction to it. That's where the book bogged down a bit for me.
I would say that the author and I agree politically. However, even to me, it seemed a bit preachy with an obvious liberal bias -- regardless of the fact that it's all true! I couldn't stop wondering how someone who didn't agree with the politics of the author would have reacted to the book.
One of the biggest issues I had with the book was the poor editing. I don't know if the author had an editor at all, as there were issues that never should have made it to press -- starting on, I believe page two! "They only thing they were doing faster..." was an obvious typo, but there were instances of just poor grammar/diction. "The ruckus engine" instead of raucous. "...a mute point" rather than moot point. Someone should have known better-type issues. There were more of both types.
But the book was good, and I did enjoy it. It explored a subject that is quite current and should be explored. It opened up a world that is quite different from our own but similar as well. I liked many of the characters. I wish we'd gotten to know the grandfather a bit more.
Don't get me wrong. This was a good book, probably worthy of at least another half star (I wish I could give those). It just had some issues.
Fun story. Interesting characters. This is one of those stories set a little bit in the future and describing a possible result of today's trends.
Loved the book. The Evolution of Robert Carr, shows us a dystopian future where the integration of implanted technology is seen as, not only recommended, but "required" to compete. Where jobs have been outsourced to fully automated factories and the disillusioned non-enhanced youth are driven to band together and burn those factories to the ground to protest the lack of gainful employment. What is fascinating, yet scary, is how possible this future might be given our current course. Within that future the page turning trip with Robert lets us experience what is means to be enhanced, and how enhancement can deeply effect Robert's relationships with his friends, family and loved ones. And, in the end, through Robert's eyes we get a glimpse into how his experience, might just cross over from magic to miraculous.
A combo of Kurt Vonnegut and Neal Stephenson. Reads like an update of The Illuminatus Trilogy. So funny and timely. A great apocalyptic novel. Recalls Brave New World, Logan's Run, and still manages to be sweet and light-hearted. Addictive, you may be tempted to read while driving, which is dangerous. Beware!
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is very well done. The author is obviously very creative, and the novel's futuristic views are in many ways Orwellian. I am, therefore, calling the author the George Orwell of this century.
What a hoot. Completely agree with Kirkus review that the novel is reminiscent of a rollicking Kurt Vonnegut social-science fiction adventure romp. But I'd add it's Vonnegut by way of John Hughes. A coming of age buddy comedy unlike anything I've read or seen. Something like a cross between Breakfast Club and Spike Jonze's 'Her'. Not really a 'YA" story necessarily but had at times a Hunger Games-ish ability to make me think about 'big' ideas while keeping the story in a high-paced, dynamic setting. I realize i'm making comparisons instead of describing the novel itself but I can't think of a way to get across what's so great about the story-telling without giving away too much of the fun. Suffice to say that it's not just socially insightful and not only passes the requisite sci-fi plausibility/credibility litmus test, but it's been a long, long time since i remember having as much fun reading a novel. Especially a 'smart' novel. Again, wish I could think of a better non-spoiler way to convey just how sharp the plotting and storytelling is. but suffice to say the writer nailed that rare feat of making each new successive sequence seem equal parts surprising and inevitable. Totally original voice, telling an equally originally story. Highly recommend.
